Meaning by Example: There’s someone you work with you who you “just can’t stand.” You PERCEIVE her as “always complaining, always getting her way, manipulative, spoiled, annoying!!” Reality: You would not perceive this person in this negative way if you did not have those qualities within yourself. You are projecting your own feelings about yourself onto her. Our enemies can be our greatest teachers. You may unconsciously dislike certain qualities that exist in yourself, and so you project that negative feeling on to someone who is reflecting those qualities back to you.
How to love your enemy:
1.) Become aware of who you “can’t stand.”
2.) Challenge yourself by asking, “how is that person’s behavior not unlike mine?”
3.) Use your answers as guides to decide what “stuff” you’d most like to work on within yourself.
